Bucketlist Road Trip

Many of you followed my road trip this past summer and asked questions about locations, travel tips, and camping/accommodations.

For those of you who are interested in our route or are looking for something fun to add to your own, this is the route we took, as well as activities in each location.

Carlsbad Caverns NP

  • Cavern Tour
  • Camp: Walmart in Carlsbad (2401 S Canal St, Carlsbad, NM 88220)

Great Sands NP

  • Hiked 700 feet up High Dune
  • Attempted Sandboarding; It doesn’t work in the rain
  • Camp: BLM Land (37°31’37.2″N 105°35’36.7″W)

Canyonlands NP

  • Green River Overlook

Lower Calf Creek Falls

  • 3-Mile Hike to the Falls (Read more Here)
  • Cold Swim

Bryce Canyon NP

  • Drive through Capitol Reed NP on route from the falls
  • Helicopter Tour (Read Helicopter Hoodoos for more information)
  • Sunset Point > Wall Street > Navajo Loop > Queen’s Garden Trail
  • Camp: BLM Land (37.626331, -112.228073)

St. George, Utah

Zion NP

  • Walk: Lower Emerald Pools (Only recommend for weak hikers)
  • Hike: The Narrows (Going as far as Wall Street is a must)
  • Splurge – Mimi’s Cafe crepes
  • Nearby Hike: The Subway (requires backcountry hiking permits obtained through a lottery) – Read more about Hiking the Subway

Occasional tree ladders helped you continue through the canyon

  • Canoeing on Lake Powell (rented from Kayak Lake Powell)

Petrified Forest NP

  • Blue Mesa Trail Loop

Albuquerque, New Mexico

  • Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride (Adam’s Balloons)

Guadalupe Mountains NP

  • Camp: Pine Springs Campground (Inside Park, $8 per night)
